This Wednesday morning, the death of Soldier Alexander Orozco was confirmed. On the past Monday, February 26, Orozco ended the lives of a captain, a second sergeant, and a soldier, and injured another comrade at the Jungle Battalion No. 49 in Putumayo.
After killing his comrades with a standard-issue rifle, Orozco attempted to escape on a boat along the Caquetá River but was intercepted and captured following a lockdown plan, during which he sustained injuries. Subsequently, he was airlifted to a healthcare center in the city of Florencia, Caquetá, for medical attention due to the severity of his wounds. Despite surgical intervention, he did not survive.
While authorities have not confirmed a motive, one hypothesis suggests Orozco may be an infiltrator from the dissident FARC group. The FARC, or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, has been known to target security forces in Putumayo to strengthen its presence in the region. The Carolina RamĂrez structure of the Eastern Southern Block EMC, along with Border Commands linked to the Second Marquetalia and local gangs, are also active in the area, and the Army has engaged in clashes with these groups.
The shooting resulted in the deaths of Captain Juan Pablo Herrera Mazo and Sergeant Second Carlos Rojas Octavo. Soldier Yoandris MejĂa MejĂa was initially injured and transferred to the Caquetá department for medical attention, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Orozco is accused of being an infiltrator from the Carolina RamĂrez front of the FARC dissidents, under the command of alias ‘Iván Mordisco,’ within the National Army’s battalion.
According to Army information, several soldiers were contacted by this criminal structure to infiltrate the battalion and carry out these crimes.
