San Andrés, Colombia: In a dramatic maritime rescue operation amid rough year-end seas, the Colombian Navy’s Coast Guard saved 25 irregular migrants, including eight minors, who were attempting a perilous journey towards Central America.
The rescue mission unfolded after the Maritime Traffic Control and Maritime Surveillance System (DIMAR) detected a suspicious vessel speeding south of San Andrés. Reacting quickly, a Rapid Reaction Unit (URR) from the San Andrés Coast Guard Station intercepted the vessel before it could disappear into the choppy waters.
Interception Reveals Vulnerability
Upon interdiction, the Coast Guard discovered two San Andrés residents illegally transporting a diverse group of migrants on board. The rescued individuals included five Colombians, nine Ecuadorians, and 11 Venezuelans, eight of whom were minors. This dangerous attempt to reach Central America violated merchant marine regulations and put lives at risk.
With the utmost care, the Coast Guard transported the rescued individuals to the San Andrés station for thorough health assessments. They were then handed over to Migration Colombia officials for processing, ensuring proper handling of their immigration status. Recognizing the vulnerability of the minors, they were entrusted to the Departmental Family Commissioner’s care, prioritizing their well-being.
Justice Served, Future Prevented
Adding to the success of the operation, the vessel’s crew, including one individual with a history of migrant smuggling offenses, were apprehended and transferred to the Attorney General’s Office for legal proceedings. This decisive action not only safeguards immediate lives but also sends a strong message to deter future human smuggling attempts.
