Massacre in Santander de Quilichao, Cauca: Teacher and Family Killed

In a harrowing incident, a new massacre has sent shockwaves through Colombia, specifically in the southwest region of the country. Three individuals, all belonging to the same family, fell victim to the violence in the early hours of Friday, December 22, within the Canoas reserve in the Carbonero sector of Santander de Quilichao.

According to information provided by indigenous authorities, armed assailants invaded their home, delivering a barrage of gunfire that claimed the lives of three family members.

Among the victims are the esteemed teacher and indigenous leader, John Freiman Ramos, his wife Yisel Mensa, and one of their daughters, Jelen Charit Ramos Menza, aged 15. The assailants executed this tragic act at approximately 4:00 a.m., leaving the family’s residence in the Nuevo Carbonero settlement within the Canoas reserve, just minutes away from the urban center of Santander de Quilichao.

As reported by the Association of Indigenous Cabildos of Northern Cauca, the armed perpetrators swiftly fled the scene in an unknown direction following the brutal attack. This marks the 93rd massacre in the country for the year, according to the Institute of Studies for Development and Peace (Indepaz), and the eighth in Cauca.

In a parallel incident in the Cauca region, specifically in the Vilachí hamlet, two young individuals identified as Davison Fernández Ramos and Jesús David Labio Ramos lost their lives. Authorities are currently investigating to ascertain any potential connections between these two tragic events.

“This massacre adds to the two double homicides that occurred in Caloto and Corinto earlier this week. The bloodshed and the humanitarian crisis continue to deepen in each territory,” emphasized the Association, highlighting the escalating gravity of the situation.
