Colombian Army rescues three people kidnapped by the GAO-r in Gigante, Huila

A fourth person, held against its will, was reportedly injured by the kidnappers and died on the scene.

Gigante, Huila, Colombia – February 13, 2024 – Colombian soldiers rescued three people kidnapped by the Ismael Ruiz residual armed group (GAO-r) in a swift operation on Monday. A fourth hostage, injured during the kidnapping, died despite receiving medical attention.

One injured hostage succumbed to their wounds despite medical aid, while another received treatment at a Garzón healthcare facility and is recovering well. The remaining two hostages were unharmed.

Soldiers apprehended three suspected GAO-r members at the scene. They seized a long rifle, ammunition, various firearms, and two non-lethal rifles. The detainees and confiscated materials were handed over to authorities for investigation.

The Colombian Army condemned the kidnapping and murder as a “blatant violation of human rights” and vowed to pursue legal action against the perpetrators. They reiterated their commitment to combating illegal armed groups and ensuring peace in Huila department.
