ELN Leader’s Call to Mobilize Raises Concerns in Colombia

BOGOTÁ, Colombia (February 16, 2024): A video of a prominent member of the National Liberation Army (ELN) expressing agreement with President Petro’s calls for social mobilization has sparked controversy in Colombia. In the video, Nicolás Rodríguez Bautista, alias “Gabino,” stated that the ELN supports mobilizing people for specific causes and claimed to be working with the government in this regard.

This statement has raised concerns due to the ELN’s long history of armed conflict and criminal activities. While President Petro advocates for peaceful mobilization to advance his reform agenda, the involvement of a known insurgent group raises questions about manipulation and potential violence.

The video, intended for an academic event, was leaked and has caused public debate. Critics emphasize the stark difference between a democratically elected government and an armed group calling for mobilization, particularly as the ELN faces accusations of kidnappings and other crimes.

Adding to the tension, Defense Minister Iván Velásquez announced yesterday that the exact number of people currently held captive by the ELN remains unknown. This follows the recent kidnapping of political analyst John Jairo Jiménez, attributed to the group.

The government has not commented on Gabino’s video or the alleged collaboration regarding mobilization. President Petro’s strategy of encouraging peaceful demonstrations faces a critical test as concerns mount over potential manipulation and the involvement of armed groups.
