In a recent development, Colombian President, Gustavo Petro’s remarks about alleged paramilitary activities in Tierralta, Cordoba, have ignited a wave of criticism and discord. During a public address in Ayapel (Córdoba) on March 19, 2024, Petro voiced concerns about reported criminal actions attributed to the “Clan del Golfo”.
Colombian president, Gustavo Petro cited reports of road blockages purportedly orchestrated by the “Clan del Golfo” in Tierra Alta, prompting him to issue a directive for immediate military intervention to clear the roads. However, following Petro’s announcement and the subsequent deployment of security forces, a video emerged depicting a group is of local farmers expressing dismay and refuting the accusations leveled against them.
One farmer, speaking on behalf of the gathered community members, adamantly denied any involvement in paramilitary activities and asserted their right to engage in peaceful protest. He challenged Petro’s characterization of the farmers as “paramilitaries” and demanded respect for their grievances.
The farmers explained that their demonstration stemmed from frustrations over the municipality’s failure to address critical infrastructure needs, particularly the completion of road projects essential for local commerce. Despite repeated attempts to engage with municipal authorities, they claimed to have received no response or support.
Expressing frustration over Petro’s remarks, the farmers emphasized their commitment to their community’s welfare and urged the president to retract his statements. They called upon local officials to actively engage with their concerns and provide tangible solutions to address their grievances.
Meanwhile, Tierralta Mayor David Contreras also weighed in on the controversy during a subsequent government meeting, expressing dismay over Petro’s characterization of the situation. He clarified that the reported road blockages were due to community demands for essential infrastructure improvements rather than any paramilitary activity.
As tensions simmered in Tierralta, Petro’s remarks and subsequent events underscored the importance of accurate information and constructive dialogue in addressing community grievances and fostering trust between citizens and government authorities.
