In a recent report, the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology, and Environmental Studies (Ideam) has issued a stark warning about the escalating threat of forest fires in Colombia. A staggering 86% of municipalities across the country are now at risk, prompting the issuance of red alerts for 952 municipalities.

The alarming situation has also triggered concerns about potential landslides, with 33 municipalities currently under threat and seven on high alert. Furthermore, the levels of the Magdalena and Cauca rivers are experiencing significant depletion.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro addressed the pressing issue via his official account X, revealing that both outgoing and incoming mayors had been briefed about the impending consequences of the El Niño phenomenon on the nation. Petro emphasized the accuracy of the predictions, highlighting the municipalities’ limited capability to plan and execute zoning projects, as well as their inadequate capacity to formulate plans for climate risk mitigation.

“The nation must take on a proactive role in risk management, preparing for climatic tragedies before they occur and prioritizing prevention over response,” President Petro stated.

He concluded his statement by stressing the urgent need for Colombia to establish a comprehensive plan to support municipalities currently grappling with water shortages. The nation faces a critical juncture, demanding swift and concerted efforts to mitigate the impact of the unfolding environmental crisis.
